UKAOS is pleased to announce the publication of the UKAOS MUO Emergency Presentation Report, produced by the UKAOS Malignancy of Unknown Origin (MUO) Subgroup.
The report presents findings from a national survey exploring how patients with suspected MUO who present as emergencies are currently managed across the UK. With 144 responses from 100 organisations, including representation from all 21 English Cancer Alliances as well as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the report provides an important overview of current pathways, governance and service provision.
The findings highlight significant variation in MUO pathways, inconsistent access to outpatient MUO and NSS services, limited 7-day Acute Oncology provision, and ongoing challenges relating to referral processes, accountability and workforce pressures. The report also emphasises the important role Acute Oncology Services currently play in supporting patients presenting with MUO.
Three key national recommendations are outlined, including the development of proposed MUO standards, a national stakeholder event to explore future service models, and the need for partnership-based pathways with clear governance and accountability.
Members are encouraged to share the report within their organisations and networks and to use it to support local discussions on pathway development, access to diagnostics, specialist review, governance and workforce development.
